About Shih Tzus
Shih Tzus are a small, affectionate toy breed, weighing 8 to 16 pounds with a lifespan of 10 to 18 years, historically bred as an imperial companion dog in China.
They stand 8 to 11 inches tall and feature a long, continuous double coat that grows constantly and sheds very little, making it a popular choice for allergy sufferers.
Shih Tzus require daily brushing for a long coat or a short professional puppy cut, alongside regular face and eye cleanings.
They are friendly, playful, outgoing, and deeply loyal to family. They get along wonderfully with children and other pets and prefer staying close to their human.
They are low energy but need short walks and regular indoor playtime.
Brachycephalic
Shih tzu have flat faces meaning they struggle in high heat and require careful breathing mannagement..
Common issues
Shih Tzu are prone to dental disease due to crowded teath, eye injuries and patellar luxation.
Training
Shih Tzu are very intelligent, although they can act goofy at times. Repetition and structure aids greatly in their training routine.
